We disentangle the effects of biodiesel incentives and shale oil expansion on the long-run equilibrium price relationships among biodiesel feedstocks and crude oil in the United States (US) and European Union (EU). We find that the 2005 Energy Policy Act in the US substantially increased the responsiveness of soy oil, canola oil, and corn oil prices to crude oil price movements. However, in recent years, expansion in the global supply of crude oil from shale oil extraction has offset the effects of US biodiesel incentives and blending mandates. In the EU, the Indirect Land Use Change Directive of 2015 substantially reduced the responsiveness of biodiesel feedstock prices to crude oil price movements.

The scientific advances that underpin economic growth and human health would not be possible without research investments. Yet demonstrating the impact of research programs is a challenge, especially in areas that span disciplines, industrial sectors, and encompass both public and private sector activity. All areas of research are under pressure to demonstrate benefits from federal funding of research. This exciting and innovative study demonstrates new methods and tools to trace the impact of federal research funding on the structure of research, and the subsequent economic activities of funded researchers. The case study is food safety research, which is critical to avoiding outbreaks of disease. The authors make use of an extraordinary new data infrastructure and apply new techniques in text analysis. Focusing on the impact of US federal food safety research, this book develops vital data-intensive methodologies that have a real world application to many other scientific fields.

Currently developments in two bodies of literature address the determination of optimum levels of storage. One approach, the use of inventory models, has developed as a generalization of the familiar lot size problem in management science models [9, 17]. The decision unit in these models is the firm or frequently a decentralized management unit or authority [4, 12, 15].

The cornerstone of the 1977 and 1981 Farm Bills for crops is a buffer stock-supply management program involving the farmer-owned reserve and acreage adjustment instruments. Among the several reasons normally cited for adopting this type program is price and income stability. However, recent swings in commodity prices, net farm income and government program costs have stimulated widespread interest in farm program redesign and modification in 1985.

Summary
Introduction
The existing system for sensing, recording, and reporting weather conditions and producing forecasts has been developed mainly in response to demands of specific clients. Weather conditions and forecasts provided for airline navigation and agricultural production management are but two examples. The result is that the system for producing, storing, and disseminating weather data and forecasts has strong historical linkages to the demands of major clients and the sensing and recording technologies available at the time of implementation. Location of first-order stations at airports, the cooperative observer system, frequency of reporting, and the levels in the atmosphere at which data are observed all can be viewed as having a user-based history.
With the advent of new sensing, recording, and reporting technologies, and changing needs of existing clients and the entry of new clients, there has been a growing effort to justify economically the system supplying these services. Weather data and forecasts are produced to a large extent by the public sector and made available at a highly subsidized user cost; that is, the data are public goods. To provide an economic rationalization for the production and dissemination system, it must be shown that the rate of return, or benefit relative to cost, is consistent with that available from alternative employment of societal resources. For this calculation, the relevant cost and benefit concepts are, of course, social, as opposed to private or individual.
The effort to justify economically the weather information system has resulted in a number of research activities and suggested organizational changes.
